Gayle King is a well-known American journalist, author, and television personality. She was born on December 28, 1954, in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and spent part of her childhood in Ankara, Turkey, where her father worked as an electrical engineer.
She attended the University of Maryland, College Park, and earned a degree in psychology.
Gayle King began her career as a production assistant at WJZ-TV in Baltimore, where she met Oprah Winfrey, who was working as an anchor at the time. She later became a reporter at WUSA-TV in Washington, D.C., and then moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where she worked as a weekend anchor and reporter.
In 1981, she joined WFSB in Hartford, Connecticut, as a news anchor and held the position for 18 years. During that time, she also served as a special correspondent for The Oprah Winfrey Show and co-hosted a talk show called Cover to Cover.
In 1997, King hosted her own syndicated talk show, The Gayle King Program, but it was canceled after one season due to low ratings. She then started The Gayle King Show on XM Satellite Radio in 2006.
On January 3, 2011, she became the host of a new program on OWN titled The Gayle King Show. Later that year, she joined CBS to co-anchor CBS This Morning with Charlie Rose and Norah O’Donnell.
Gayle King’s partnership with Charlie Rose was well-received, and they developed a strong friendship even after Rose left CBS due to allegations of sexual misconduct.
As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, Gayle King extended her agreement with CBS News in January 2022 to continue co-anchoring CBS Mornings.
In her personal life, Gayle King has been a close friend of Oprah Winfrey since 1976. She was previously married to Bill Bumpus, and they have a son named William Bumpus Jr. and a daughter named Kirby.
