Louis Alan “Pete” Williams, born on February 28, 1952, is a former American journalist and government official known for his work as a television correspondent for NBC News. He was born and raised in Casper, Wyoming, where his father was a dentist, and his mother was a teacher before becoming a realtor.
Williams attended Natrona County High School, where he was part of the winning debate team and was recognized for his public speaking skills. He actively participated in both the Teenage Republicans organization and the National Honor Society.
After graduating from Stanford University in 1974 with a degree in journalism and history, Williams began his career in local news with the Casper television station KTWO and its radio station. Later, in 1986, he worked as Dick Cheney’s press secretary, and during the George H.W. Bush administration, he followed Cheney to the US Department of Defense, where he served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs.
In 1993, Williams left the Defense Department and joined NBC News as a journalist. Throughout his career, he primarily covered news related to the Supreme Court and the Department of Justice. On July 29, 2022, NBC News announced his retirement. He has received three national news Emmys and was honored with an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of Wyoming in 2012 for his contributions to journalism.
