Environmental Justice Fellowship for Young African Professionals 2023

The EJ Legal Fellowship provides an exciting opportunity to two young, rising professionals who are committed to assisting communities in securing rights to their lands, resources, and knowledge.

The legal fellows will be introduced to a wide range of environmental and human rights issues, as well as given hands-on experience and training in research, legal empowerment, data collection and analysis, public interest litigation, law and regulation analysis, and advocacy.

Application Deadline: September 19, 2022, 5:30 p.m. East African Time

Countries that are eligible for Environment justice fellowship for young African Professionals 2023:

  • Position 1 in Kenya’s East African Hub (Nairobi)
  • 1 position in Senegal’s Western African Hub (Dakar) – 1 position in South Africa’s Southern African Hub (Cape Town)
  • One position on the Natural Justice Core Team in Nairobi, Cape Town, or Johannesburg.

The number of awards is not specified.

Award Value: A modest salary will be offered.

Programme duration: The Fellowship will last approximately 12 months full-time. Successful applicants will be expected to start right away.

Eligibility for Environmental Justice Fellowship for Young African Professionals 2023

  • A bachelor’s degree in law
  • Fluency in English is required for locations in South Africa and Kenya, and fluency in French is required for locations in Senegal.
  • Capability to conduct research, write reports, and draft legal documents
  • Excellent writing abilities, as well as the ability to critically analyze environmental laws and policy issues
  • A thirst for knowledge and a commitment to environmental justice
  • Ability to work efficiently and on time
  • Dependability and meticulousness
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team
  • A willingness to travel frequently on short notice and sometimes for extended periods of time
  • An understanding of, and sensitivity to, the needs and concerns of people from various cultures, backgrounds, and orientations.
  • Committed to self-development and continuous learning, with a focus on professionally promoting organizational interests, objectives, and values
