Rhodes Scholarship 2023 | University of Oxford (Fully Funded)

The Rhodes Scholarship 2022-2023 is a fully funded scholarship for international students. This scholarship is available for master’s and PhD studies and includes a living stipend (£15,144 per year), all University and College fees, and the University application fee.

Coverage for Rhodes Scholarships


The Rhodes Scholarship provides the following benefits to the recipient:

  • A stipend for living expenses (£15,144 per year);
  • University and college tuition;
  • One economy class flight to Oxford to begin the scholarship and one economy class flight back to the student’s home country at the end of the scholarship.
  • The application fee to the university;

The Scholarship is valid for two years, subject to satisfactory academic performance and personal conduct. The Scholarship may be extended for a third year for those who take a recognized route to the DPhil, subject to an application process (PhD).

Rhodes Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Rhodes Scholarship, candidates must meet all of the requirements listed below:

  • Citizenship and residency: Each applicant must meet the citizenship and residency requirements of the Rhodes constituency for which they are applying. Check out the list of eligible countries here.
  • Education: All applicants must have completed an honors bachelor’s degree by October. Furthermore, academic standing must be sufficiently high to ensure admission to the University of Oxford, which has extremely competitive entry requirements. A minimum GPA of 3.75/4.0, or equivalent, is required in Canada.
  • Age: Age limits vary by constituency and range from 18 to 28 by October 1st of the year following selection. The age limit in most constituencies is 24 or 25. Before applying, please carefully review the age requirements for your constituency. Following the selection process, successful candidates will arrive at Oxford in October. Normally, the Scholarship cannot be postponed.
  • English is required.

How Do I Get a Rhodes Scholarship?

To apply for a Rhodes Scholarship, please follow the steps below:

Documents required:

In general, all constituencies will require the following materials in various forms:

  • Curriculum vitae/resumé or list of major activities (Please do not include a photograph in your CV for this scholarship.)
  • Evidence of academic record / transcript (completed or in progress) of undergraduate degree and any postgraduate study
  • Personal statement or essay (including, crucially, a clear statement of what the applicant wishes to study at Oxford and why)
  • English language proficiency (where English is not the first language). Check the requirements here.
  • Proof of age / birth certificate / passport
  • Photograph
  • Four reference letters from appraisers who can attest in confidential references to the applicant’s character and intellect, including academic, personal, extra-curricular, and leadership achievements (and who should never include people to whom you are related).

Step by Step Application Process for Rhodes Scholarships:

(1) You can apply online at http://www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk/scholarships/apply via the scholarships tab.

(2) You must submit your application online, along with all supporting documents, by the deadline.

(4) Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a social engagement and a final interview. You must be available to attend both events in person, as no accommodations can be made for the date, time, or mode of these events. There will be no selection without an interview. The Rhodes Trust will cover the round-trip cost of a First Class rail ticket but not hotel expenses. International travel for those attending from other countries cannot be funded.

(5) The results of all applications will be emailed to all applicants.

The Rhodes Scholarship is awarded without regard to marital status, race, ethnic origin, color, gender, religion, sexual orientation, social background, disability, caste, or any other irrelevant distinction. The provision of such information in the ‘Outreach’ section of the application form is optional, but it helps us to ensure that our selection processes are fair and that our outreach efforts are effective; those involved in selection will only see summary statistics of these responses in an anonymized format that cannot be traced back to the individual.

The Rhodes Scholarship is only confirmed upon acceptance to the University of Oxford.
If a sufficiently qualified candidate cannot be found, no choice will be made.
The decision of the Selection Committee is final.

Following Selection:

Please keep in mind that successful applicants must apply to the University of Oxford as soon as possible after being selected. Full details will be provided upon selection.
The full application of successful candidates will be available to Rhodes House, Oxford, where the Scholarship references can be re-used, if appropriate, in support of the successful candidate’s subsequent application to the University of Oxford.
Successful candidates will be encouraged to disclose in confidence any medical condition or special needs that may necessitate academic or personal support in Oxford. This disclosure is entirely voluntary and is requested solely to enable Rhodes House to provide appropriate support in Oxford and to make the transition to Oxford as smooth as possible.
